Aesthetically the tank and the mudguards remained orange and in plastic, while the sides were slimmed so that the inferior part of the frame tubes were left uncovered. The 80cc model was aimed only at private costumers, so SWM lined up officially in five classes: 125, 175, 250 , 347 and 370 cc.
While Rotex engines undermined and defeated worldwide competition, the 125 revealed to be tired, as a matter of fact since 1980 the testing of a new propellant with lamellar aspiration, smaller sizes had started and it debuted on the world stage during the 3rd trial of the European Championship in Sitges, Spain.
The new bike, with a slightly revised frame and equipped with a new 125cc engine with small carters, overhead and cylinder cooled with air, radial finning and mixed lamellar intake, in the carter pump and in the cylinder, as for the 347 cc.
By the end of the year the cylinder was cooled with a liquid, but anyway a slight finning remained.
The final evolution of the new off road bikes, called RS-GS-TF3, occurred on the occasion of the Six Days at Isola d’Elba. The official bikes, in fact, came with a new iron big fork with rectangular section with shaped rockers and a very forward sleight for the Marzocchi AG6 shock absorbers, so that they could operate vertically.
A Marzocchi Piffero fork with forward 38 mm gudgeoned.

As to the sports aspects, SWM achieved good results, in spite of the fact that Brissoni had left to join Fantic and Andreini had left to join Maico and this had negative effects on the final results.
Walter Bettoni, class 125, Lugi Medardo class 175, Franco Gualdi class 250 and Gian Angelo Croci, with 440,  in the class 500 formed the official team.
Luigi Medardo won the 175 class while Gualdi and Croci ranked second in their classes in the Italian Championship.
Croci and Medardo ranked second while Gualdi finished third and Bettoni fifth in the European Championship.
During the Six Days at Isola d’Elba (6th-10th October) Italy won the Trophy for the third time in a row, once more the team was mixed up with three SWM bikers Croci riding a 440, Gualdi a 250 and Medardo a 175.
During the Six Days 17 golden medals, 22 silver medals and 2 bronze medals were won, this was the end of a less brighter season than all the previous ones and was the doom of the coming decline.
The trial activity was luckier for sure in fact the French Gilles Bourgat won the World Championship riding a 320 TLNW, so that a Spanish bike didn’t first win the title.
In the meantime the plants in Rivolta d’Adda came into full swing and aimed at making their way up again so during the Milan Motor show a new four-stroke prototype powered 500 cc was presented, and it was studied also for off-roads uses.
At the end of the season, always during the Motor show, another prototype of the RS GS 126 with water was presented but it still featured two shock absorbers.
