1972 – This was a year of utmost importance for Puch, due to a series of lucky events.
After the British Six Days of 1971, the Sports Team of the Yellow Flames released, due to their having reached maximum racing age, some of their best riders. Amongst them were Carlo Paganessi, Alessandro Gritti and Bernardino Gualdi. These riders immediately joined the Austrian team, who was able to give them excellent machines, improved and even more powerful than the 1971 models.
Thanks to a lighter frame, with tubing a mere 1.6mm, pins and spokes in titanium, conical hubs and an electron fairing, plastic fenders and fuel tank, Gritti's 125cc weighed a mere 78kg.
Sand cast head and cylinder brought to mind Marini's 250cc, with a rectangular section with fins straight up and rounded, a sophisticated reed valve system, it allowed the engine to reach 22hp and at the same time to achieve a respectable amount of power at low revolutions.
The great versatility of the engine could be perfectly utilized by making use of the five speed gearbox, with a huge energy saving for the rider.

This explosive cocktail of engines and riders increased the already long list of victories achieved by Puch. The frontrunner was without doubt Alessandro Gritti who dominated the 125cc class at the Valli Bergamasche (24/25 June) qualified 2nd in the 175cc division of the Czech Six Days at Spindleruv Mlyn (11/16 October) and crowned his season with a victory at the Italian Championships in the 125cc category, together with Bernardino Gualdi, Italian Champion in the 175cc class.
Without major technical changes, the mass produced model undergoes a change in look.
The frame is lowered by 2cm, the colour now silver and the fuel tank is in red nylon. The silencer system now has an expansion chamber with a muffler, which allowed for more room for the rider's legs.
A five speed gearbox for all models, Betor forks and the classic steel mudguard is fitted.
The declared potency of the motorcycle have also increased: 19 hp at 9.000 rpm with a 30 mm Bing carburetor for the 125cc and 20,5 hp at 8.000 rpm for the 175cc.
Reliability is guaranteed by a new sturdier drive shaft as well as a new transmission system. To start with the front fender was still mounted low, but was later lifted.
